Reverend Melva Hartzog


Rev. Melva Hartzog is an ordained itinerate elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, licensed to preach in 2001 at Greater Allen AME Church under the pastorate of Rev. Brenda J. Gregg. Rev. Hartzog earned a B.A. in Administration of Justice from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Divinity from Payne Theological Seminary, and a M.A. in Professional Counseling from Liberty University.

Rev. Hartzog is currently the pastor of Bethel AME Church in Tarentum, PA. She has a passion for helping women experiencing intimate partner violence, men and women involved in the criminal justice system, and adolescent girls struggling to find their way in life. Pastor Hartzog has served as a mentor, bible study co-facilitator, and volunteer chaplain at the Allegheny County Jail, and is currently part of a team of voices who speak on behalf of the Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh to help bring public awareness to intimate partner violence.

Previous pastorates include Elizabeth Nesmith AME Church in West Mifflin, PA, and New Life AME Church in the Homewood inner-city community of Pittsburgh, PA.

Pastor Hartzog’s favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
